Myanmar
Security forces in Myanmar have engaged in “systematic torture,” including gang rapes, beatings, strangulation and the use of electric shocks, U.N. investigators said. The abuse took place in detention facilities, according to a 16-page report from the Independent Investigative Mechanism for Myanmar. The country’s military leaders have been locked in a civil war with several armed groups since a 2021 military coup against an elected civilian government sent Myanmar spiraling into chaos. According to the U.N., 19.9 million people in the country need humanitarian assistance and at least 3.6 million have fled their homes.

Sudan
At least 40 civilians were killed when the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) group stormed a camp for displaced people, according to emergency workers. The Abu Shouk camp, which is already in the grip of famine, has come under attack before. The Emergency Response Room, a volunteer first aid group, said RSF fighters opened fire inside homes and that people were shot execution-style and by stray bullets. The RSF has been at war with Sudan’s central government since April 2023. Tens of thousands have been killed and millions forced from their homes, causing what the UN calls the world’s worst humanitarian crisis.

Gambia
The death of a one-month-old girl due to female genital mutilation (FGM) has prompted fury from women’s rights campaigners in Gambia. The baby was rushed to hospital in the capital Banjul after developing severe bleeding but died on arrival. Gambian activist Fatou Baldeh called it "a brutal, senseless act" in a post on X. "Shame on anyone pushing to decriminalise this violence. FGM is not culture, it’s cruelty," she said. Gambia outlawed FGM in 2015 but enforcement has been weak. The practice remains widespread, and supporters are advocating for the ban to be overturned by parliament.
