Nigeria
The death toll from an attack on a mosque and several nearby villages in northwestern Nigeria has risen to 50, a local official told AP. “The bandits killed 30 people and burned 20 others during attacks on several villages,” Aminu Ibrahim, a regional MP, told the state parliament. As mentioned in previous editions of Proximities, northern Nigeria is grappling with severe insecurity and such incidents are common. A similar attack last month killed at least 150 people. Despite promises, the government has failed to get the situation under control.

Children suffering from malnutrition in Gaza City will be “condemned” to death due to Israel’s assault on the city without an immediate emergency aid response, the U.N. said. Philippe Lazzarini, head of the U.N. Palestinian refugee agency, said there has been a sixfold increase in the number of children suffering from malnutrition in Gaza City since March. "We have a population that is extremely weak that will be confronted with a new major military operation," he told a Geneva press club meeting. "It is a manufactured and fabricated famine. It is deliberate. Food has been used as an instrument of war.”

Brazil
The former president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, planned to flee to Argentina rather than face trial for allegedly planning a coup, according to police. In a 170-page report, they also accused Bolsonaro and his son Eduardo of obstruction of justice. They said they found a 33-page draft letter to Argentine President Javier Milei on Bolsonaro’s phone in which he asked for asylum. The 70-year-old is accused of conspiring to overthrow President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva after losing an election to him in 2022. The final phase of the coup trial starts on Sept. 2.
