Peru
Peru’s congress has voted to remove wildly unpopular President Dina Boluarte as rampant crime and a spiraling murder rate rock the country. The swift move came hours after a shooting at a concert in the capital Lima prompted public fury. Boluarte, who has had approval ratings as low as three percent, came to power in December 2022 after her predecessor was removed in exactly the same way. The congress quickly voted in 38-year-old lawyer José Jerí to succeed her, and he immediately pledged a war on crime. The country, where a normal presidential term is five years, has had a staggering seven presidents in under a decade.

Burkina Faso
Burkina Faso’s foreign minister, Karamoko Jean-Marie Traore, said his government has rejected a proposal from the administration of President Donald Trump to take in foreigners expelled from the U.S., calling it “indecent.” Trump’s government has struck deals with African nations, including Ghana and Eswatini, to receive deportees. “Burkina Faso is a land of dignity, not deportation,” Traore said, adding hospitality should not be misconstrued as “an opportunity for a third country to get rid of certain populations that it considers undesirable.”

Afghanistan
Earlier this week, we covered the story of Afghanistan’s internationally-isolated Taliban government dispatching its foreign minister to India in an attempt to shore up relations. It appears to have been a successful trip with an announcement today that India will reopen its embassy in Kabul. Afghanistan will also send diplomats to New Delhi. Though the neighbors have historically had friendly ties, India closed its embassy in Afghanistan when the Taliban swept back to power in 2021. About a dozen countries still have embassies in the country, but only Russia has formally recognized the Taliban as the rightful government. The reestablishing of ties between New Delhi and Kabul will have been hastened by shared tensions with Pakistan and an Indian concern that major power rival China is making its own inroads with the Taliban.
