Dear subscribers,
I'm glad to write to you again and hope you've been well during the newsletter's hiatus.
I’m excited to share the news that Proximities is back.
Work and other commitments forced me to shut it down last year. Recently, though, I’ve made the (scary) decision to leave my job and go independent. Relaunching Proximities – with an additional element – will be my first project. I will now have enough time to ensure it is a consistent daily publication.
Don’t worry, not a lot is changing.
The format of three bite-sized summaries of non-Western news stories is staying put, and it will remain completely free from Monday to Friday.
But I’ve turned on a payment option for those who want to support the newsletter financially now that I’m going independent.
It costs about as much per month as a sandwich.
Those who do go paid will get a bonus Saturday edition in which I’ll write a longer and more conversational post. Expect explainers on overlooked stories from around the world, guides to help you more easily follow stories yourself, critiques of Western media coverage, and occasional rants.
Here’s a handy button for you to go paid. Click it - or smash it, as YouTubers say.
Proximities will now also be active on Instagram. Please do follow: instagram.com/proximitiesnews
In addition to the newsletter, I’m planning other projects that will focus on under-reported stories and try to cut through the bias we often see from major news organisations. Your support will go a long way toward helping me fund that important work.
This next bit is crucial! If you’ve valued Proximities over the years and want to help me grow it, please shout from the rooftops about the relaunch. Use your social accounts, WhatsApp groups, email lists, or just tell your friends and pets.
If I’m going to make this work, word-of-mouth really is the most effective thing.
If you’ve read to the end of this email, well, thank you.
Expect the first edition of Proximities 2.0 in your inbox tomorrow.
Warmly, as always,
Barry.
