Sudan, Myanmar, Israel
Today's three stories you should know
Sudan
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has referred the chief of staff of Sudan's army, 12 other defendants and six companies to its State Security Court over what it says was an attempt to smuggle arms through its territory. The UAE’s state news agency WAM said the shipment was intercepted before it was to be loaded onto a private plane. Sudan's army chief of staff General Yassir al-Atta, who has often publicly criticised the UAE, was charged in absentia. The war in Sudan erupted three years ago between the military-led government and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group. Multiple reports and investigations have established that the UAE is providing financial and military support to the RSF, which has been accused of carrying out war crimes and acts of genocide.

Myanmar
Myanmar’s jailed former leader and Nobel laureate Aung San Suu Kyi is to be moved to house arrest more than five years after she was detained during a military coup. Suu Kyi’s whereabouts have often been unclear in that time and her son Kim Aris had raised concerns about the 80-year-old’s health. Responding to the news, Aris said: “I still do not know where my mother is. I do not know how she is. I remain deeply concerned about whether she is still alive. If she is alive, I ask for proof of life.” After a brutal crackdown on protests that followed the coup, Myanmar descended into a civil war that has engulfed most of the nation.

Israel
An Israeli rights group has petitioned the Supreme Court to demand the immediate release of 14 doctors from Gaza who have been held without charge in Israel for more than a year. Physicians for Human Rights-Israel (PHRI) said the prisoners, who include paediatricians, orthopaedic specialists and surgeons, have been subjected to physical abuse and that they have been denied adequate medical care and food. Among those in custody is Dr Hussam Abu Safia, the director of Gaza's Kamal Adwan Hospital, who was detained in December 2024 when Israeli forces stormed the facility, which was the last functioning hospital in northern Gaza. Safia’s lawyer told his family that he has lost 40kg in prison, and has suffered four fractured ribs along with other ailments.
