Sudan
People have been killed, raped and extorted while fleeing the city of el-Fasher in Sudan since it was captured by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) paramilitary group on Monday, according to the UN. Up to 2,000 civilians, including 460 in a hospital, have reportedly been killed in ethnically-motivated reprisals by the RSF, which is at war with Sudan’s army and had laid siege to the city for 18 months. An estimated 36,000 people have fled the city, mostly on foot, to the town of Tawila, about 70kms away and already sheltering 650,000 displaced people. Aid workers fear only a fraction of el-Fasher’s civilians will be able to escape.

Tanzania
Police in Tanzania have fired live ammunition and tear gas at protesters in the commercial capital, Dar es Salaam, a day after a general election. Demonstrators are angry that the two biggest challengers to President Samia Suluhu Hassan were barred from running against a backdrop of what critics say is growing government repression. A human rights activist told Reuters he had reports of five protesters being killed, while a diplomat said there was reliable information that at least 10 people were dead. Hassan won praise after coming to power in 2021 for easing crackdowns on dissent, but is herself now accused of authoritarianism with several opponents of the ruling party missing.

Palestine
Israel has erected almost 1,000 gates, barriers and walls in the occupied West Bank since Oct 7, 2023, according to a local government body. While there have always been a large number of barriers restricting the movement of Palestinians, the scale and pace of the construction is unprecedented, residents said. The gates are reported to have unpredictable opening times with some staying closed for days, locking people out of their homes. The UN said the barriers are preventing people from accessing healthcare and education. More than 1,000 Palestinians, including more than 200 children, have been killed by Israeli forces and settlers in the occupied West Bank since Israel’s war on Gaza began, UN tallies show.
